Tiger Lion Hawk: A Story of the Flying Tigers

childrens story of the Flying Tigers of World War II
This rare book is a strong tale of the flying tigers of world war II. Written for the younger reader it is still a very personal story. While cannons flash and bullets fly the details of the battles in the sky and the words of brave men ring very true. I would have thought the publishers date on this to be 1950:as it seems filled with anger and rage for the enemy. Saburo Ito Japan's most famous fighter, Drew Elsmore Americas flying tiger. A tiger a Lion and both were Hawks.

The Top One Hundred Italian Rice Dishes
Published in Hardcover by Headline (07 September, 2000)
Author: Diane Seed
Average review score:

I love this lady's books on Italian cooking!
I have The Top 100 Pasta Sauces and I think that it is a very useful book. We pull it off the shelf to make last-minute dinners from any vegetables lurking in the crisper and get a nutritious, elegant dinner in no time.

Now Diane Seed has written the Top 100 Italian Rice Dishes and I could NOT wait to get this. One of us at home had to stop eating wheat, which mean pasta, other than from special grains, was out. So we eat rice, which anyway I personally prefer.

Risottos are really wonderful but there is more than just risotto in this book. There are soups, cassaroles, molded rice rings and more. Some dishes are simple, some are quite complicated and worthy of a dinner party.

My favorites so far are the Rice and Eggplant Palermo Style, Lemon Risotto, Spinach Risotto and Pumpkin Risotto. These are healthy, vitamin filled and interesting dishes that are easy to digest. There are also lovely meat dishes, including a Sicilian Christmas rice platter that includes meatballs, sausage and chicken.

Many of the recipes specify Arborio rice. This is a flat grained, medium rice that cooks up rather like pasta (a bit al dente.) It can be expensive and hard to find everywhere in the US, so you might have to substitute medium grain Spanish rice, which is not the same. I sometimes substitute Thai rice in defiance of the recipe and it works, although the result is a bit different. The authentic Italian Arborio comes out moist and even a bit soupy at times. So if you can get Arborio rice, fine, if not, wing it and it still tastes wonderful.

Treasured Middle Eastern Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Samira Yako Cholagh (01 August, 1998)
Authors: Samira Yako Cholagh, Samira Yako Cholagh, and Carole Richards
Average review score:

Excellent Variety of Dishes and Graphical Illustrations
This is a one of a kind textbook in that it covers a wide variety of middle eastern famous dishes. In addition to providing precise instructions on how each dish is made, it does a wonderful job of showing pictures of the finished products. I was surprised by the amount of effort that went to the development of each dish and associated photographs. For the price of one meal, you have hundreds of dishes that can be easily made in the privacy of your home. You can actually impress family and friends with the delicious dishes you can prepare by following the simple instructions given by Mrs. Yako.

Twice upon a Time: Stories (Rice Modern Masters Series)
Published in Paperback by Rice Univ Pr (December, 1996)
Author: Daniel Stern
Average review score:

An underrated Master.
Daniel Stern's short stories are funny, wise, fresh and more than anything else a wonderful antidote to the dry, zombie stories that have been the rule in this MFA culture of literature. And I haven't even gotten to the fact that Stern boldly uses literature and art as a sort of ironic guide for life, full of questions without any answers. He's read all the books, I mean all of them. Hopefully, Stern will be remember as part of the greatest Literary movement of the post-WW II American scene, Jewish-American writers.

The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook: 250 No-Fail Recipes for Pilafs, Risottos, Polenta, Chilis, Soups, Porridges, Puddings and More, from Start to Fini

turns a rice cooker into a major kitchen appliance
I used to use my rice cooker several times a week. With this cook book and my new fuzzy logic rice cooker, I use it several times a day. It will appeal to cooks of all levels. For cooks experienced with rice and whole grains, the most important part of the book will probably be recipes for the porridge cycle of a fuzzy logic cooker: rice porridge, puddings, custards, and hot cereals. Even for experienced rice cooks, however, this book has excellent information on different varieties of rice and different types of dishes. In addition to many styles of rice dishes, it includes recipes for other grains such as couscous, bulgur and grits. It is well laid out and has commentaries on grains and dishes that will enable creative cooks to invent their own recipes as well as using the very tasty recipes included in the book. Although the recipes suggest the size of the cooker to be used, you need to use some common sense. I have a small cooker and have successfully made recipes suggested for other size cookers. This book is utterly clear and easy to follow. All the recipes work, and all taste wonderful. If you have a rice cooker, especially a fuzzy logic cooker, you need this book.

"The Vampire" manages to be both funny and scary!
Another winning tale from the pen of Bebe Faas Rice. Martha and Charlie are resourceful, appealing protagonists. The story builds to an exciting climax.

Be sure to read Ms. Rice's other fine books, which include MUSIC FROM THE DEAD, THE YEAR THE WOLVES CAME, and the two CLASS TRIP novels.
